Joseph François Michaud The History of the Crusades (Vol.1-3)

The History of the Crusades in 3 volumes is a historical work by French historian Joseph François Michaud which provides a comprehensive look at the Crusades, including political and military battles in Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor. The Crusades were a series of religious wars initiated, supported and sometimes directed by the Latin Church in the medieval period, especially the campaigns between 1096 and 1271 in the Eastern Mediterranean aimed at recovering the Holy Land from Islamic rule. Michaud expands the term of Crusades, including in his work the wars against Turks in Europe in 13th, 14th, and 15th century, concluding with his reflections on the state of Europe, on the various classes of society, during and after the crusades.

Varlotta Lori E. Student Affairs Budgeting and Financial Management in the Midst of Fiscal Crisis. New Directions for Services, Number 129

This volume is designed to help senior student affairs officers navigate through uncertain economic times. After a broad review of budget models and the leadership potential of the senior officer, we look at the role of student affairs officers in difficult budgeting decisions from several perspectives–from small, private colleges to the experiences of twelve senior student affairs officers at public universities. One chapter describes general revenue-generating and cost-saving strategies that student affairs divisions may consider during cutbacks; another focuses on key aspects of developing a comprehensive communication strategy: a third presents a case study of a single institution through the eyes of the vice president for student affairs. This volume ends with a summary survey of the authors observations, conclusions, and advice. This is the 129th volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report series New Directions for Student Services. An indispensable resource for vice presidents of student affairs, deans of students, student counselors, and other student services professionals, New Directions for Student Services offers guidelines and programs for aiding students in their total development: emotional, social, physical, and intellectual.

Han Ke-Li Hydrogen Bonding and Transfer in the Excited State

This book gives an extensive description of the state-of-the-art in research on excited-state hydrogen bonding and hydrogen transfer in recent years. Initial chapters present both the experimental and theoretical investigations on the excited-state hydrogen bonding structures and dynamics of many organic and biological chromophores. Following this, several chapters describe the influences of the excited-state hydrogen bonding on various photophysical processes and photochemical reactions, for example: hydrogen bonding effects on fluorescence emission behaviors and photoisomerization; the role of hydrogen bonding in photosynthetic water splitting; photoinduced electron transfer and solvation dynamics in room temperature ionic liquids; and hydrogen bonding barrier crossing dynamics at bio-mimicking surfaces. Finally, the book examines experimental and theoretical studies on the nature and control of excited-state hydrogen transfer in various systems. Hydrogen Bonding and Transfer in the Excited State is an essential overview of this increasingly important field of study, surveying the entire field over 2 volumes, 40 chapters and 1200 pages. It will find a place on the bookshelves of researchers in photochemistry, photobiology, photophysics, physical chemistry and chemical physics.

Charmaine Wijeyesinghe L. Enacting Intersectionality in Student Affairs. New Directions for Services, Number 157

While models of identity and student development have been essential tools for student affairs practitioners, intersectionality has increasingly been recognized as an analytic framework that captures the complex interaction of social identities at the personal level and in larger social systems. This volume demonstrates how intersectionality informs and enhances student affairs practice in the areas of student identity theory, programming, research, coalition building, residential life, service-learning, international student services, and strategic planning in significant and transformative ways. It: Provides multiple, concrete examples of intersectional interventions and programs, Evaluates the promises and challenges of implementing intersectionality in day-to-day practice, and Describe how its core tenets enhance our understanding of resistance, privilege, and students’ responses to social justice education. The contributors also wrestle with key questions that arise when we enact intersectionality in student affairs work, such as whether the framework reflects the experiences of people from privileged social groups or what additional social categories should be considered when addressing identity from an intersectional perspective. This is the 157th volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly series. An indispensable resource for vice presidents of student affairs, deans of students, student counselors, and other student services professionals, New Directions for Student Services offers guidelines and programs for aiding students in their total development: emotional, social, physical, and intellectual.

Kate Macdonald The Politics of Global Supply Chains

The Politics of Global Supply Chains analyses the changing politics of power and distribution within contemporary global supply chains. Drawing on over 300 interviews with farmers, workers, activists, businesses and government officials in garment and coffee sector supply chains, the book shows how the increased involvement of non-state actors in supply chain governance is re-shaping established patterns of global political power, responsibility and accountability. These emerging supply chain governance systems are shown to be multi-layered and politically contested, as transnational governance schemes interact with traditional state governance arrangements in both complementary and conflicting ways. The book’s analysis of changes to the relationship between state and non-state actors within transnational governance processes will be of particular interest to scholars and students of globalisation, global governance and regulation. The Politics of Global Supply Chains also suggests some practical ways by which the effectiveness and accountability of supply chain governance could be strengthened, which will interest both scholars and practitioners in fields of global business regulation and corporate social responsibility. Conclusions are relevant to the business and civil society actors who participate directly in non-state governance schemes, and to state regulators whose distinctive governance capacities could play a much greater role than at present in supporting transnational, non-state governance processes.
